Troubador

March 1, 2010

This New Jersey band I hope gets picked up very soon! Troubador is an indie rock foursome with some decent talent.
The thing that drew me to this music is on top of the beautiful soft piano, guitar and bass melodies with clever drumming- there is a soothing beautiful voice. Perfect for a home picnic in the backyard with tea and cupcakes! I hope all you guys support them, especially all you New Jersians who have the opportunity to see them live. In the meantime check out their kooky interview:

How did you come up with the name?
During u.s. history class, we were learning about Troubadours, and I [Erika] thought it would be the single coolest thing just to live that kind of lifestyle, like to just travel around and play music for my whole life and to meet new people so it was always in the back of my mind, because I have ALWAYS wanted to be in a band that if I ever did, it would be called Troubador.

Tell me a little about yourselves?
Erika Ricchini (piano, vox), Chris Small (guitar, vox), Elliot Reynolds (Bass, assorted percussion) and Dave Henry (drums).

What did you guys do before the group started?
Just normal high school things I guess haha, we’ve all been into music pretty much our whole lives, I started out when I was not even a year old yet, singing before I could walk and playing around on my grandparents upright piano at the same time I was learning to walk. I officially took up music in 3rd grade, I started playing violin. I didn’t learn piano until Freshman year. We have all played on church worship teams at one point or another as well.

How did you start out/ was it hard?
Strangely enough, not at all. songwriting is something that comes naturally to all of us, and we’re like-minded in the musical sense so it’s very easy to play off of each other but we’re also musically different enough to be able to produce our signature unique sound. it’s a perfect fit.

Any big plans for the near future?
Our between the truth and the lies-ep is set to release about this time next month and we’re also hoping to tour this coming summer. we hope to be signed on a major label sometime in the future and make music our careers.

–Random questions–
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
Erika- either Purple Bottle by Animal Collective– it’s just so good, it gets turned on as soon as I get in my car– or Hoppipolla by Sigur Ros, it’s the single happiest song I have ever heard in my entire life.

Chris- Into the Sea- As Cities Burn

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
Erika- either my macbook pro or my cameras/Lenses/Film.
Chris- my macbook pro.

(we’re all Mac people.)

What important lesson have you learnt from being in a group?
Nobody is perfect. we all have our flaws and our moments and tend to get snappy with each other at times but for the most part, we’re like a family and in the end we’re always willing to work it out one way or another, even if that is giving someone distance for a little while. oh! and communication is key!

Do you have a secret name for your favourite inanimate object?
I drive a 1992 Buick Skylark named Raolina. I talk to her. I even refer to her as “her” in front of the guys and I think it might creep them out a little.

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
[laughs to herself] I don’t know about the other guys, but for me, it’s attracted both boys AND girls alike…

Has anything crazy or embarrassing ever happened during a live gig?
Well, it’s kinda become a tradition for Chris to break a string almost religiously, always in the WORST part possible. there was also a time when EVERY show we played we forgot SOMETHING important. for example, when we played in Philly once, I forgot my piano stand (had to use a table form the bar) and Adam forgot his sticks (my dad had to cross the bridge to bring them!) another time, we were playing an hour and a half away in Vineland and Adam forgot his cymbals (no idea how that happens) luckily, another band was nice enough to let us borrow theirs. the only one that we couldn’t recover from was when we were playing a last-minute show up in trenton, and I forgot the power supply for my keyboard– let’s just say we had to improvise and it was NOT a very good show :o)

Everyone should have take a long peek at their MySpace music page for plenty of videos and tracks to listen to!

Update:
The have an upcoming show for “Between the Truth and the Lies EP” (March 19th) available to purchase at their shows and on iTunes. They are planning on returning to Gradwell House studios to work on their second EP.
