Near

August 18, 2010

Near is a band comprised of four young and talented guys from New Jersey. They create some real nice chilled out indie/rock music with some elements of folk in there (in my opinion). The mix of clever drum beats and great acoustic guitar melodies only add to the ‘easy on the ears’ vocals. Perfect for listening to while driving on a clear sunny day with the windows down and wind in your hair! To add to the appeal of this band, these guys seem genuinely down to earth, personable and most importantly patient (this post should have gone up months ago along with a lot of other posts so I apologise to the band for this long delay).

Check out the interview below:
How did you come up with the name?
Well, I guess it was the one that we fought over the least… The NEAR Shoemaker is actually the name of the first spacecraft to orbit an asteroid. It also happens to be the name of a character from an anime. We usually like to leave the true origins of the name up to speculation though 🙂

Tell me a little about yourselves?
Tim Pearson- 22 years old, from Erial, NJ (piano, vocals)

Kevin Finn- 24 years old, from Collingswood, NJ (synth, guitar)

Mike Sherry- 22 years old, from Atco, NJ (guitar, vocals)

Ray Gallagher- 21 years old, from Deptford, NJ (percussion)

What did you guys do before the group started?
Well, before deciding to become a band we were a crime-fighting group. That ended when we forgot to set our profiles to private on Facebook and our secret identities were all revealed. Besides that we have pretty normal jobs: Mike works for a hospital, Kevin is a teacher, Tim works at a coffee shop, and Ray is a server at Olive Garden.

How did you start out/ was it hard?
Really I’d say we’re still starting out. We’ve been together with this lineup less than a year. Honestly the hardest part has been working around each other’s schedules. The music is the easy part!

Any big plans for the near future?
The main thing we’re doing is continuing to work on recording our debut album.

–Random questions–
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
Kevin: Homesick by Radical Face

Tim: Same Mistake by James Blunt

Mike: No Surprises by Radiohead

Ray: Greet the Sacred Cow by Primus

What important lesson have you learnt from being in a group?
That we need to make sure we set aside time just to hang out every once and awhile. It can’t always be business. When Mike got married we all went camping for his bachelor party, and it really brought us a lot closer together. Now, when we play shows, I feel like the audience can sense that bond between us, and that kinda helps us establish a connection with them too.

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
Yes. Two of us are married already; how do you think that happened?

Has anything crazy or embarrassing ever happened during a live gig?
I guess the most embarrassing thing so far is when Tim’s keyboard stand collapsed mid-song during our set at BCC’s Music Fest! After attempting to continue the song with the keyboard on Tim’s lap, we ended up having to stop the song so we could fix it.

Empire of the Sun

January 8, 2009

1

Perth born Luke Steele from The Sleepy Jackson and Nick Littlemore from Pnau decided to combine their two styles of music together to create Empire of the Sun- the album “Walking On A Dream” sounds amazing! After I heard the single Walking On A Dream played heaps on the radio on holiday I HAD to shut the radio off because I loved this song too much to be ruined by the radio overplaying it.

It’s has such soothing and smooth melodies and beats- so relaxing. And the two contrasting vocals just works together so well- one brings the smooth clean sounds and the other brings the slight awkward alternative sound to the music. To be honest it kind of reminds me of Cut Copy working with the Bee Gees!

I’m sure most of you guys have heard of Empire of the Sun- you gotta support these guys yo! Enjoy the music!
