Sub Rosa

December 13, 2008

l_7308741a1c4442a7bddee8a554bcc093

This duo has impressed me with their new style of nu rave, moving away from the awkward vocals and casio pianos. The vocals in the tracks are smooth and chilingly soothing while the electro beats keeps the vibe more upbeat and dancey (especially in the popular song ‘Take Me With You’).

Have a read of the interview!
How did you come up with the name?
Linda: “The term ‘Sub Rosa’ is associated with many things including secrecy and confession
which is a consistent theme in my lyrics.”

Tell me a little about yourselves?
Linda: “We are currently based in Nottingham, England. I’m 23, and the vocalist and lyricist.
AK: “I’m 22 and i make all the music.”

What did you guys do before the duo started?
Linda: “Before Sub Rosa came together I was a writer, poet and just looking for artistic direction.”
AK: “I’ve been involved in various different musical projects.”

How did you start out/ was it hard?
Linda: “We’ve known each other on and off for eight years and have dabbled in music production
with each other in that time. We drifted apart and then came together, more mature and with
mutual ideas.”

Any big plans for the near future?
Linda: “Yes, many. We are planning to start by establishing ourselves around the Nottingham live music scene before moving to London and travelling around the country to promote our sound.”

–Random questions–
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
Linda: “A song i cant stop listening to is Portishead’s ‘We Carry On’. The lyrics are in the style of alot
of my poetry and the beat is infectious.”
AK: “Totally love ‘Creator’ by Santo Gold at the moment, the bass is rediculous!”

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
AK: “Hats!”
Linda: “I’m not really a materialistic person but i never leave the house without some beads on.”

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
AK: “Haha, I wish!”

With music it’s always hard to explain the music, especially with alternative music. So just have a quick listen to the songs they’ve uploaded on their MySpace…mmkay?!

Modernaire

December 5, 2008

678182259_l

Modernaire is a musical trio that creates amazing alternative-electro music. Not a big fan of grouping musical groups together in case they get offended but if you like Metronomy and The Knife and so on, check this trio out.

They’ve played around the UK with bands such as The Ting Tings, The Hot Puppies, Dragonette, The Holloways, The Whip, Friendly Fires, Ratatat, Clarky Cat, The KBC, Daggers, Alec Empire, Yelle, Disco Drive, Metal on Metal, Trash Fashion and many more.

How did you come up with the name?
It’s a song by Dez Dickerson from Purple Rain, the Prince film.

Tell me a little about yourselves?
We’re Oscar Wildstyle, Chesty La Rue and Cruella De Mill. We’re ageless, and from the South of England.

What did you guys do before the group started?
Twiddled our thumbs and practiced our instruments.

How did you start out/ was it hard?
We just wrote a few songs, recorded them in our bedrooms instead of attending lectures at college, and then as soon as we put up a myspace we started getting offered gigs around the country.

Any big plans for the near future?
Recording our debut album.

–Random Questions–
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
Kid Cudi – Day and Night

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
My Laptop.

What important lesson have you learnt from being in a group?
There are a large number of cretins that walk this earth.

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
Not that I’ve noticed, or particularly tried…

Has anything crazy or embarrassing ever happened during a live gig?
During every live gig, yes. Wires unplugging, band members unplugging, ceilings collapsing, band members collapsing. Disaster upon disaster.

So that’s Modernaire guys, have a look at their music and keep an eye on their tour locations- they might pop around to Perth? You can also buy their second EP online ‘Velvet Never Dries’, it’s not that expensive so if you like them help support them!
