What many of you may not know is that I do tend to take an interest in graphic designs every so often. I love how each artist puts in their own unique interpretations of an image or object they see. Adam is one of those designers that has a very creative outlook that can be seen in his paintings and designs. In his illustrations, he tends to blend in the sketching of various people, animals or objects and integrate some bright colours into it. This combination really does look interesting!

Have a read of his interview, he does have a funny embarassing story!!

Who’s the brains behind the designs?
I’m 21, I’m from sydney but currently live and work from Stockholm sweden, i work as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator and i paint aswell.

I work in all different disciplines from print design, to motion to illustration to art. I mainly work in the arts and music industry however i have recently been moving on to different areas like video and branding which is something im looking forward to doing more of. I like to do as much as i can, i have recently done an album cover for an american guy called desmond reed, he makes these quirky songs so i did some quirky illustrations. and I’m currently working on promo video for sony and creating artworks to show over here.

When and how did you start out?

I started studying graphic design in 2005 at the same time i started designing websites and posters for friends bands. I was also always painting then aswell, i think i wasnted to study fine arts but i kind of realised i can do both and get a diploma in graphic design to make me “Job Worthy” i guess i was playing it safe.

Was it hard to actually start producing?
No not really it all just kind of happend, i would say it was/is easy i guess i would say every thing just felt right and it still does so i will continue

What’s your inspiration behind the designs?
Every project is different as it always based on what someone wants, but i have been lucky enough to get alot of projects that i have been told to just do what i want, however sometimes this is hard as there is no starting point of as brief. I create art aswell and show in galleries as often as i can, my art has been my escape from the disciplines of design and until recently i never wanted them to be in the same place however more and more my art and design seems to be coming together into the same place. as for inspiration i am always browsing the internet, reading design magazines, going to art shows, watching and listening to music. I guess i would say that i am inspired by what is around me at the time, and at the moment because i have had to pack up my studio i am working alot with graphite and gouche, im working on a series or artworks based losely around viking mythology and chaos, they are coming along nicely

What did you do before you began designing?
before i started designing hmm well im only 21 so there isnt much i did, i just surfed all the time, i worked as an electrician for a little bit before i started studying and quite quickly realised it wasnt for me.

Any advice for aspiring artists?
do what ever feels right

Any big plans in the near future?
Yeah i would really like to start working in a studio, or find a studio to work from, its getting quite lonely working by myself all the time. Im planing for an exhibition here in stockholm. And just make pictures basicly

–Random questions–
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
bon iver , Beth orton, Belle and sebastion, city and colour and mock orange

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
my computer

Do you have a secret name for your favourite inanimate object?
not really i have a nickname for a pony tail, its not and inanimate object but its simple just PT

What’s the most embarrassing/awkward situation you’ve been in?
Ha im so awkward they happen all the time hmm okay the other day i was looking for a new apartment in stockholm, i put an ad on the internet looking for a new “Apartment” and i got an email back from a woman saying “OH IM SO HAPPY I SEEN YOUR AD FOR A PARTNER I WOULD LOVE TO MEET YOU” and so on, she even sent a picture of herself, i sadly had to let her know i was looking for an apartment not a partner

Check out his other artwork!

Paulie Waulie

Skills That Kill

Paulie Waulie is a new Perth based designer- thank god it’s about time we got even more Perthians in the design and production business! His shirts would appeal to a wide range of guys who loves to look pretty damn good. The combination of bright colours work so well with each other without being too over-the-top-oh-my-god-my-retinas-have-been-burnt-away type thing, if you know what I mean.

He answers the interview questions honestly and he pretty much says what a lot of people think about saying. Shows that this dude is as easy-going and laid back as a Perth guy gets but add that with creativity, style and initiative- you get Paulie Waulie:

How did you come up with the name?
I would love to give a long-winded story about how there was a bloke name Paul who influenced my life and inspired me to designs clothes, but the truth is; it just sort of came to me.
I don’t know who Paul is…

Who’s the brains behind the designs- tell me a little about yourself?
I have no fashion design qualifications or background; in fact until about a year ago I wouldn’t even have considered myself an ‘artsy’ or creative person. I decided to give designing a real go when I realised how often I would see guys wearing the same things, no matter what club or pub you went too. I’m not bagging out on ‘mainstream’ fashion, but I just thought I’d give it a go and add my 2cents to this ever-evolving industry. There’s nothing worse than stepping out onto the town and realising your mate is wearing the same tee – c’mon we’ve all done it.

When and how did you start out?
It was about 3 years ago and a good mate and I were watching a DVD of one of our favourite bands in concert. We were discussing how bands never came to Perth, but if this particular band ever toured the East Coast, we would fly over and see them. We thought it’d be cool (should we ever go see them in concert) to wear custom made t-shirts, and whilst designing a few of these so called ‘band shirts’ (purely for shits ‘n’ giggles), I realised I quite enjoyed the art of designing. After about 2 and a half years of just designing ‘everyday t-shirts’ for fun, I was chomping down a bowl of chicken pasta one night and thought “what do I have to lose?” And the rest is history.

Was it hard to actually start producing clothes?
SHIT YES! Once you’ve got a bit of a line together that you actually like (which can take a while), you’ve then got to find a production/manufacturing company who are prepared to take you seriously and actually make your clothes – and more importantly make them how you want them. It’s hard to be taken seriously when you only want such a small order made. I always thought it was funny how the smallest orders always take the longest to make… go figure?

What’s your inspiration behind the designs?
I’m tired of winter being all about blacks and greys and dark colours, so I wanted to produce designs which were big, bright and colourful and something you could wear all year around. Summer is my favourite time of the year and I wanted my designs to represent and have a bit of a “summer feel”. Over the last couple of years in Perth, summer has been all about music festivals and I believe that my designs fit the market and ambience of the summer festivals, so it will be good to hopefully see a few Paulie Waulie t-shirts jumping around in the mosh.

What did you do before you began designing?
I’m currently half way through a Sports Management degree which is pretty cool. It’s basically a business course which specialises in the sport industry, so I do a lot of accounting, management, marketing, business law etc. I never thought my uni course would help my hobby as much as it has.

Any advice for design students who wants to start a line?
Starting a clothing line takes a lot of time, a lot of money and a lot of patience. At times I can be a very impatient person so It was frustrating when the production company was like “yeah, we can have it too you in about 6-8 weeks”, especially when I wanted them the next day haha. Another thing to realise and constantly remember is that every label starts off small. No matter how big a label is now, they all started as an idea. Look to bigger labels for inspiration, but never try and compare yourselves to them because this will just piss on your parade. Think real, but dream big!

Any big plans in the near future?
I would love to get another handful of designs produced on v-neck and scoop neck t-shirts for summer, sometime early January would be awesome. I’m also thinking about singlets for a pre-2009 launch. It all depends really how this first range goes though.

–Random questions–
What songs have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
That’s Not My Name – Ting Tings
Shake Shake – Metro Station
I’m Yours – Jason Mraz

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
Oh definitely my mobile phone, I feel naked without it.

Do you have a secret name for your favourite inanimate object?
My current car is called Lucy II, named after my first car which was the original Lucy… I have no idea why I named the first one Lucy. In fact I’m struggling to remember why I name my cars at all.

All of the tees available for purchase are $40 (+ postage and handling) which is a really decent rate for a t-shirt these days. Parklife is coming up and i’m sure you all can agree that these tees would fit in very well- you’ll definitely be one of the few with a unique design too. So doooo eeeeeeeeet now……

How did you start out/ was it hard?
void808 started after void lost a member and they still wanted to play so mike and jay joined up , lucky void had been around a few years so they had lost of contacts to get gigs and stuff so it wasnt hard

Any big plans for the near future?
we are currently working with a woman who has a label and handles lots of big gigs , she has already got us a gig with atreyu, and we have been meeting with hollywood producers, and we just released a 3rd cd so we may be having some big things comming our way

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?

team work

Do you have a secret name for your favourite inanimate object?

it used to but most of us have had steady girls for a long time , a wife , a fiance , and long term girlfriends

Has anything crazy or embarrassing ever happened during a live gig?
Jay has tripped at a show over a loose carpet , mike has started playing the wrong song . oscar has forgot a lyric or two , brandon has had drum sticks go flying

Random Product of the Week

September 8, 2008

This random product REALLY is random!

It’s a really interesting concept that apparently really works and is available for purchase.

The candy that provides you with a sensational new way to see.

This delicious new confectionary uses cutting edge Sensory Substitution Technology to transmit vivid emotive images into your mind’s eye.

Available in six unique flavours, each helping you achieve the right state of mind by projecting specially created evocative imagery into your field of vision.

Eye Candy is the natural way to become the person you want to be.

Each of your senses (touch, smell, sight, taste, hearing) sends information to the brain at a different frequency. The brain determines where the sensorial information it receives comes from by the frequency at which it resonates, it can then process it in the appropriate way (e.g. turn sight information from the eyes into pictures in the mind).

An array of resonators positioned on the surface of an Eye Candy transmit information from the tongue to the brain at the frequency that the eyes usually send visual information to the brain. A pleasant sensation of soda bubbles can be felt on the tongue as the mind decodes this sensorial information as vivid pictures. This process is called sensory substitution and can be used to supplement peoples senses, enabling them to see the evocative images contained within Eye Candy.

It seems hard to believe that such thing actually exists doesn’t it? It is difficult to get your head around the idea- but there’s a link to Wikipedia (thank god for wiki) about sensory substitution technology. So if you wanna know the gritty details, just click on the link.

Now as mentioned, there are 6 available candies (mindsets) that you could try:

RELAX. Tranquil fish swimming through the streams of your consiousness will help you to unwind.

SOCIALISE. The shooting stars will encourage sociability.

ASSERT. A big thumbs is guaranteed to reassure and motivate you.

MEDITATE. The the slowly shrinking circle helps you to meditate.

OVERCOME. Images of spiders will enable you to overcome your fears.

FOCUS. Direction giving arrows help to improve focus and attention.

For more information or to order online just check out the site. If anyone has tried it let me know how it goes!

September 5, 2008

Metronomy’s music is something I plan to get out there, it’s currently one of my personal favourites. Just to remove all confusion (like Muscles), there is ONE guy behind Metronomy called Joseph Mount, though he is joined by Gabriel Stebbing and Oscar Cash in his live shows to help him out. His music is absolutely awesome, it’s currently my most played music on my iPod.

Of course he also does many remixes! So far here’s the list:
Architecture in Helsinki, Infadels, Magnet, Dead Disco, Roots Manuva, Franz Ferdinand, Temposhark, Sébastien Tellier, Klaxons, Box Codax, Max Sedgley, The Young Knives, Ladytron, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Kate Nash, DNTEL, Good Shoes and Gorillaz.

His first album “Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe)” was released in 2006 and his newest album “Nights Out” sounds even better! From what I’ve heard and read, the light shows & their synchronised dancing when they play live are quite amazing.

The songs are quite the alternative sound so if you do like music such as The Knife or Hot Chip, be sure to download this song and give it a listen.

Here’s a song from their newest album Nights Out- due to be released on the 8th of September!

It doesn’t take long to download so just do it!

Dear Dad, Yours Truly

September 4, 2008

Dear Dad, Yours Truly know how to rock things up with their catchy guitar riffs and lyrics- you really can’t help buy start to nod your head (even a little bit). These American guys are no stranger to the band lifestyle and performing in front of big crowds. Despite all that, they still have the down-to-earth attitudes that all fans hope their rocking bands never lose – Doesn’t hurt that these guys aren’t bad-looking either. Check out their awesome and again one of the most informative interviews I’ve received (in particular check out the last random question):

How did you come up with the name?
“Dad” is in reference to the big guy upstairs. Our band name is the beginning and end of a letter to Him. I (Rayon) was watching T.V. bored out of my skull around 3 A.M. since I had just finished resigning from my previous band and was already thinking, “what should I name the next one?” I wanted it to be something big, and I could think of nothing bigger than God. As all of this ran through my head, a hallmark commercial pops onto the screen depicting a child writing a letter to her father. I thought, that’s got to be a freaking sign! So there you have it… “Dear Dad, Yours Truly”.

Tell me a little about yourselves- (So I can stalk you guys)?
Stalk us? Well in that case…
Daniel Rayon/21/Miami, FL, U.S.A./Vocals
Daniel Cartagena/21/Brooklyn, NY, U.S.A./Guitar
Luke Rice/19/Asheville, NC, U.S.A./Bass
Angel Delgado/19/Miami, FL, U.S.A./Drums

What did you guys do before the group started?
We were motionless and void of existence.

How did you start out/ was it hard?
Each of us had been in several bands prior to DDYT (with the exception of Cartagena who just jammed a little with friends) but none were successful. I went about the task of relentlessly searching profiles on MySpace for talented musicians that were willing to audition for the band. After nearly 4 months of searching I found the other Daniel. Followed by Luke 2 months after that, and then Angel who replaced the original drummer most recently and became the final piece to the perfect puzzle. Was it hard? More like Exhausting! But well worth it in the end…

Any big plans for the near future?
We definitely have huge plans for the future! Right now we’re working on an upcoming tour to promote our debut album “Between Two Worlds.” As for labels, keep checking in at our MySpace because we certainly have a thing or two up our sleeves. That’s all I can say (:

–Random questions–
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
Daniel R.- Time is Running Out by Muse
Daniel C.- Inside the Fire by Distrubed
Luke- Break Down by DDYT… and Russian Roullette by 10 Years
Angel- Almost Easy by Avenged Sevenfold

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
Daniel R.- My girlfriend
Daniel C.- My cell phone… and guitar.
Luke- My Mark Nason boots
Angel- Drumsticks

What important lesson have you learnt from being in a group?
Daniel R.- It’s awesome!!!
Daniel C.- Never take anything personally
Luke- Band chemistry is just as important as musicality
Angel- Patience

Do you have a secret name for your favourite inanimate object?
Our Inner Alien. Oh, and Llama

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
Although being in a band does have its “perks”, Fame and attention is not the main reason we’re out there. To us it’s about the music and generating a positive message… If the fans decide they want to show up and do something crazy that’s completely up to them.

Has anything crazy or embarrassing ever happened during a live gig?
Top 3 Crazy Concert Moments:
3– Luke almost smacking me in the face with the end of his bass multiple times at different shows.
2– Me accidentally jumping on the other Dan’s pedal and switching him from distortion to clean in the middle of a guitar solo in front of 25,000 people.
1– When we first performed our track “Once More”, and dedicated it to the troops, at one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in Florida. You could see people crying their eyes out by the hundreds. It was one of the most emotional moments of the band’s career.
**Bonus- When that meteorite crashed into the ocean right behind our beach show and caused a massive tsunami that washed tiger sharks onto the city streets and everyone got eaten alive. That was crazy!

Now their songs are available on iTunes, Rhapsody, and Amazon Worldwide. I highly recommend everyone who likes Rock to check these guys out- who knows, maybe if there’s enough Aussie fans they might come down our way?
