Good Little Fox

These three guys were the first band I ever saw live at Mojo’s in Freo and I’m so glad my friend dragged me there on that particular random night or else I wouldn’t have heard the awesomeness that is Good Little Fox- an Alternative/Pop Indie band. First of all the Carl the singer has an amazing voice it was kinda hard not to listen- normally the band in a bar would provide some background music but in this case I ended up actually watching the band. Their readiness to experiment with different styles of music gives them some variety in their music- such as ‘Breathe You In’ where some synths has been added to it.
In addition to their talent- they have a sense of humour! I just love it when I get funny and witty interviews and this is one of them.

How did you come up with the name?
On of our lead singer’s friends thought of it in a dream. Our bassist was once bitten on the foot by a fox though… and that’s a much better story, really.

Tell me a little about yourselves?
We’re all from the Fremantle / south of Perth area, 20-22 years old. We spend our time busking, making furniture, writing stories, travelling and eating chinese food – sometimes all at once.
Carl plays guitar, sings and messes around with effects pedals;
Matt plays drums and works out all the time;
Alex plays bass and synthesizer, and gets bitten by foxes.

What did you guys do before the group started?
Carl & Matt knew each other all through school, and played in a band called Synoptic. Alex was a previous member of Camden Stray. We were all at uni or TAFE, trying in vain to avoid the real world.

How did you start out/ was it hard?
We’d been in bands before, so it wasn’t entirely new, but it definitely took us a long time to get noticed. All the bands around us were getting huge, and we didn’t really get any attention until we came second in the National Campus Band Comp.
I think we’ve played at least of 50% of our gigs at the Swan Basement on week-nights, to a crowd of three friends, the local drunks and Alex’s mum.

Any big plans for the near future?
We’re all in Switzerland at the moment, playing a couple of hastily-organised shows, but beyond that, our future is uncertain. Our latest single will be up for free download as soon as we figure out how to work the new-fangled computing machine, and a video clip will follow soon after.

–Random questions–
What song have you been listening to most in the past few weeks?
We still can’t get over Architecture In Helsinki’s latest album, ‘Places Like This.’ I defy you not to dance!

What one materialistic thing can you not live without?
Food? Our instruments? The midget slaves we keep chained in closets to pander to our every whim, massage our egos and whisper sweet nothings into our ears? It’s so hard to choose.

Do you have a secret name for your favourite inanimate object?
I can’t think of anything rude to write here, and that depresses me.

Does being in a band help in picking up girls/boys?
Actually, we’re all in super-long-term relationships, so I couldn’t really say. To be honest, though, I doubt it. Perhaps it’s the tight purple pants, maybe it gives girls the wrong idea…

Has anything crazy or embarrassing ever happened during a live gig?
Every word that ever comes out of Carl’s mouth is a contender for most embarrassing… highlights include giving members of the audience pet names and telling dirty jokes to little children at a lunchtime show in Margaret River. Other than that; a drunk guy trying to kiss Alex onstage, keyboard malfunctions, pissing off sound engineers, fifty-year-old women hitting on Matt.
It’s all in the name of fun.

So if you’re in Perth, you can get their new self-titled E.P and single from Mills, 78’s, Planey or Dada’s. I really think everyone should check out the songs they have on their myspace. I’ve heard ‘Jealous’ played live and it was in my head for ages- then after checking their myspace again recently I have a new favourite song from them, ‘Breathe You In’. Highly recommend you have a listen…do eeeeeeet!
